The Stuart Halbert Foundation

Stuart Halbert Foundation grants

Small family and company-backed foundation, linked to the de-icing fluid maker Kilfrost, that makes grants at the trustees' discretion for general charitable purposes. Its priorities are people, animal welfare, the armed forces and the local community (Tynedale Valley 'and beyond'). Applications are accepted at any time, but only on a paper form sent by post. Charities, other organisations and individuals can apply; non-charities must name two independent referees.

Who can apply

  • Registered charities, other organisations and individuals can apply: the form's categories are 'Charity', 'Individual' and 'Other'
  • Applicants that are not charities, or have no audited accounts, must give the names of two independent referees (not family) whom the trustees may contact
  • The grant-making policy says applications from any area of the UK, and from overseas, are eligible
  • In practice the foundation's roots and past grants are in the North East, especially Northumberland and Tynedale, and it describes its local community as 'Tynedale Valley and beyond'
  • Large national charities with income over £10 million or assets of £100 million or more are not normally supported
  • Previous applicants, successful or not, may reapply and are judged on merit

What it funds

  • Projects and activities that further the foundation's general charitable purposes, within four priority areas: people, animal welfare, armed forces, and local community (which the foundation defines as 'Tynedale Valley and beyond')
  • The application form lets you request core operational costs, a one-off payment or multi-year funding, and also covers research grants
  • Past recipients include Sage Gateshead, Opera North, the Elderberries older people's programme and drop-in centre at The Alnwick Garden, Haltwhistle Community Campus, Northumberland SSAFA, Hexham Hospital and the dog rescue charity SHAK
  • No grant sizes are published

What it will not fund

  • Purposes for which the government has a statutory responsibility to provide
  • Large national charities, i.e. those with annual income over £10 million or assets of £100 million or more (not normally supported)
  • Charities dedicated to issues the trustees consider already well funded in the UK (not normally supported)

How to apply

  1. Read the foundation's Grant Making Policy and the application guidance and checklist on the How to apply page
  2. Download and complete the paper application form: organisation details, category, charitable purpose, project purpose (under 100 words), description (up to 400 words), amount requested, total cost, other funding sources, and yes/no answers on insurance, terms and conditions, monitoring visits, publicity and reporting
  3. Sign the declaration and enclose the supporting documents on the checklist
  4. Post a paper copy to: Stuart Halbert Foundation, Albion Works, Haltwhistle, Northumberland NE49 0HJ
  5. You receive an acknowledgement letter within four weeks; after that there may be no further contact until the outcome

Applications are accepted only as hard copies by post, not by email.

There are no deadlines. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received.

Successful applicants must report on progress and send a final report, normally within three months of the grant ending. Instalments can depend on satisfactory progress.

Have ready

  • Completed and signed application form, including project details and budget, your organisation's budget, and how you plan to raise the rest of the money

  • Information about your current funding position if you receive any public sector funding (e.g. local authority or Arts Council England)
  • Names and contact details of two independent referees, if you are not a charity and/or have no audited accounts, with confirmation that they agreed to be named

Research grant applicants must also confirm authorisation, statutory compliance, consents, and how the results will be published.
