Many funders run the same grant every year, so check the funder’s site for a new round. The details below are what the funder published when it was open.
Frieda Scott Charitable Trust
Main Grants Programme
Grants of £4,500 to £20,000 a year towards revenue or capital costs, from the Kendal-based Frieda Scott Charitable Trust, for charities and charitable groups with income under £1 million working in Westmorland (the former Eden and South Lakes districts, not Barrow-in-Furness). Previous grantees can ask for multi-year grants after talking to the Trust Manager. Last year the Trust made 22 Main Grants, averaging about £10,000. Priorities and eligibility were revised in March 2026, so past applicants should re-check.

Who can apply
- Registered charities are preferred, but organisations pursuing charitable purposes whose governing document shows they are not-for-profit, with a dissolution clause passing assets to similar charitable bodies, can apply
- Unregistered groups with income over £5,000 should be registered
- CICs and social enterprises must be limited by guarantee (CICs preferred), with an asset lock, no one or two directors holding significant control, no profits paid out, and most directors unpaid
- Annual income must be under £1m, unrestricted reserves no more than 12 months' operating costs, and the governing body must have at least three unrelated members
- The work must take place in Westmorland (the old Eden and South Lakes districts, excluding Barrow-in-Furness); groups based elsewhere can apply if their work benefits Westmorland residents
- National charities qualify only if they are Cumbria-based affiliates with their own charity number, or deliver regular, demonstrable activity in Westmorland, and they must still meet the income limit, judged on the national body's turnover
- Multi-year grants are only for previous grantees who have spoken to the Trust Manager first
What it funds
Revenue grants for project or running (core) costs, including a contribution to overheads, and grants towards capital works. The work must meet one of the Trust's priorities:
- Improving mental health and wellbeing
- Helping people build connections and feel included
- Supporting people and families facing complex challenges, including recovery from crisis or trauma
- Helping people overcome barriers to skills, confidence or opportunity (especially barriers linked to poverty, discrimination or exclusion)
- Building strong, resilient rural communities, including access to local services and community spaces
What it will not fund
- Organisations with annual income over £1m
- Organisations with more than 12 months' operating costs in unrestricted reserves (village halls and community centres excepted)
- Capital appeals for village halls, community halls and playgrounds (Small Grants Programme only)
- Organisations with fewer than three unrelated committee members, trustees or directors
- Charitable organisations with income over £5,000 not registered with the Charity Commission
- Organisations paying profits to directors, shareholders or members, including companies limited by shares
- Work already done, or starting before a grant is awarded
- Statutory bodies such as schools or hospitals, or statutory services (community-led playground bids on council land can be considered)
- Medical research, diagnosis or treatment (non-medical support for people with physical ill health can be considered)
- Nursery and pre-school education
- Annual or one-off events, festivals and celebrations
- Individuals or expeditions
- Places of worship or the promotion of religion
- Animal, wildlife, heritage or environmental causes
- Museums and art galleries
- National charities operating from more than one location or region (limited exceptions)
- Organisations that applied to the Trust in the last twelve months, successfully or not
How to apply
- Read the 'Our Priorities' page (eligibility and exclusions updated March 2026)
- Contact the Trust Manager to discuss eligibility and the project (required for multi-year requests)
- Apply through the Trust's online portal by 30 September 2026
Capital appeals for village halls, community halls and playgrounds go to the Small Grants Programme instead. After three consecutive single-year grants, or a multi-year grant, wait a year from the end of the grant before reapplying; unsuccessful applicants wait a year from the decision.
Have ready
- Last audited or signed accounts
- Most recent bank statement
- Governing document (if not a registered charity)
Capital appeals need three separate quotes and, where needed, secured planning permission
