St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity

Emergency Grants (Vicar's Relief Fund)

Fast crisis grants of up to £650 for individuals who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness anywhere in the UK, to help them access safe accommodation (for example rent deposits, rent in advance, ID fees or temporary accommodation costs). Grants are for individuals, but only paid frontline support workers can apply on behalf of the people they support - so staff at homelessness, housing and support charities apply for their clients. In 2025-26 the fund received 2,831 applications and awarded about £1 million.

Who can apply

  • Paid frontline support workers (from voluntary, statutory and public sector organisations) applying on behalf of individuals they support who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, anywhere in the UK
  • Members of the public, the individuals themselves and volunteers cannot apply
  • Workers must register on the charity's grants portal before applying

What it funds

  • Cash grants of up to £650 that help a person experiencing or at risk of homelessness access accommodation, such as rent deposits, rent in advance, ID fees or temporary accommodation costs
  • Grants are only given for specific costs for which evidence is required, and are issued quickly via experienced support workers

What it will not fund

  • Applications from members of the public
  • Applications from volunteers or anyone not a paid frontline worker

How to apply

  1. As a paid frontline support worker, register on the St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity Grants Portal (workers who applied on the old system in the last two years should use 'Forgot Password?' to log in)
  2. Complete an emergency grant application on behalf of the person you support, with evidence of the specific costs
  3. If awarded, the grant is issued quickly via the support worker

The fund was formerly branded the Vicar's Relief Fund (VRF); the charity's page is now titled Emergency Grants.
