Swinfen Broun Charitable Trust
Swinfen Broun Charitable Trust Grants
An endowed trust, funded from the estate of Colonel Swinfen Broun who died in 1948, making grants to organisations and individuals strictly within the boundaries of the City of Lichfield. Its trust deed is about public amenity: halls, meeting places, playing fields, sports facilities, arts venues, libraries, museums, public gardens and open spaces, plus the equipment for them. Trustees meet four times a year and it is policy to fund capital projects rather than running costs. The next application deadline is 2 October 2026 for the meeting on 14 October.

Who can apply
- Organisations and individuals within the boundaries of the City of Lichfield
- Assistance can only be given to schemes within the boundaries of Lichfield City Council, as shown on the map published on the Trust's website
- Applicants are expected to identify what other steps they have taken to raise funds, because trustees normally seek to help organisations which help themselves
- Each application is considered on its merits against the criteria of the Trust Deed, and applicants are told immediately if an application clearly does not meet them
What it funds
Taken from the Trust Deed:
- Providing or maintaining, or assisting in the provision or maintenance of, public halls, meeting places, playing fields and sports facilities for the public at large in the interests of social welfare
- Places for housing the arts, libraries, museums or other educational institutions to which the public have access
- Public gardens and public open spaces
- The equipment or items used in or with any of those
It also supports charitable institutions or purposes generally.
In general it is the policy of the trustees to support capital projects and not to make payments of an income nature.
What it will not fund
- Schemes outside the boundaries of Lichfield City Council, as shown on the Trust's published boundary map
- Ecclesiastical charities
- Relief of poverty
- Payments of an income nature rather than capital, in general
trustees make an effort not to overlap with support given by the Lichfield Conduit Lands Trust
trustees normally seek to help organisations which help themselves, so say what other steps you have taken to raise funds
