The Burden Trust

The Burden Trust Grants

A non-fundraising Bristol trust that distributes the income from its investments, set up by the will of the Reverend Harold Nelson Burden (1859–1930). Grants go to medical research, hospitals, retirement homes, schools and training institutions, homes and care for the young, and other charitable work helping people in need. The trustees favour local charitable organisations around Bristol whose objectives are broadly in line with the tenets and principles of the Church of England, and prefer to build a lasting relationship with the organisations they fund. One online form a year, considered at a single June meeting.

Who can apply

  • Charitable organisations whose work falls within the six objects of the trust
  • The trustees are particularly interested in applications from local charitable organisations in and around Bristol whose work and objectives are broadly in line with the tenets and principles of the Church of England; the trust states plainly that applications from outside the Bristol area, and those which do not follow the specific requests on the online application form, are far less likely to be considered
  • Grants may be for sums less than £5,000 or for larger amounts depending on the nature of the charitable activity and the need
  • Unsuccessful applicants are not contacted at all

What it funds

Grants within the six objects of the trust:

  • Medical research
  • Hospitals
  • Retirement homes
  • Schools and training institutions
  • Homes and care for the young
  • Other charitable work which helps people in need

Past grants named on the site include inHope, the Wheels Project, Bristol Hospitality Network and Changing Tunes.

The trustees always look at how a funded project can be sustained for the future.

How to apply

  1. Complete the online application form on the trust's website — there is no other route and no downloadable form
  2. Give the organisation's name, full address with postcode and country, and website if it has one
  3. Give a contact name and title, telephone number and email address (the email is entered twice to confirm it)
  4. Describe the charitable work, state the grant amount requested, and choose one of the six category headings
  5. Submit by 31 March for the trustees' annual June meeting

if the trustees wish to pursue an application, one of them makes contact before the June meeting to ask for further documentation — nothing is attached to the form itself

Have ready

  • Audited accounts
  • Details of trustee or management board members

neither is uploaded with the online form. They are asked for later, and only if a trustee takes the application forward before the June meeting.
