Many funders run the same grant every year, so check the funder’s site for a new round. The details below are what the funder published when it was open.

The Veolia Environmental Trust

Community Grants Scheme

Grants of £10,000 to £75,000 to create or improve buildings and outdoor spaces that benefit the community, funded by Veolia UK through the Landfill Communities Fund. The project site must be within 10 miles of an active landfill site in England, and a successful applicant has to arrange a non-refundable Contributing Third Party payment of 10% of the grant to the landfill operator before the money is released. Three rounds a year. The trust also runs a Habitat and Biodiversity scheme (from £10,000), a Whitemoss scheme for projects within 10 miles of its West Lancashire landfill site (£5,000–£75,000), and land purchase grants of £100,000–£500,000.

Who can apply

  • Constituted not-for-profit organisations, local authorities and Environmental Bodies
  • An applicant must be charitable or not-for-profit, formally constituted with a signed governing document, established for at least two years, have at least two unrelated directors or trustees, and not provide financial benefit to its leadership
  • The project site must be within 10 miles of an active landfill site in England, which you check on the landfill lookup published by ENTRUST, the regulator
  • If you are yourself an Environmental Body you must register the project with ENTRUST as Object D
  • If your application succeeds you must arrange a Contributing Third Party payment of 10% of the grant amount to the landfill operator before the grant is released; this covers the tax credit shortfall the operator keeps and is never refunded
  • Under the Habitat and Biodiversity scheme, which starts at £10,000, the project must not be for community purposes, though the site may be publicly accessible; land purchase grants of £100,000 to £500,000 are open only to registered charities and local authorities

What it funds

Creating or improving buildings or outdoor spaces that benefit the community:

  • Nature reserves
  • Sports clubs
  • Community centres
  • Parks
  • Play areas
  • Habitat restoration
  • Biodiversity
  • Improved access

Projects must promote community action and wellbeing, be inclusive and accessible to everyone, inspire the creation of sustainable carbon neutral community spaces, and protect and enhance biodiversity and natural habitats.

Examples the trust gives include improved pathways and fencing with new grassland, hedgerow and tree planting at Camley Street Natural Park in London, a volunteers' workshop with solar panels and battery storage at Kirkstall Valley Farm in Leeds, and new double glazing throughout a community centre in Birmingham.
