The R C Sherriff Trust

R C Sherriff Trust Arts Grants

Grants of £500 to £1,500 for anything that advances the arts in the Borough of Elmbridge, Surrey, open to amateurs and professionals alike. Four kinds are offered: Project grants for community-led art, Individual grants for developing an artist's own skills, Capital grants for equipment, and Underwriting grants that cover the gap between a performance's costs and its worst-case box office. The Trust funds up to 50% of costs, so other money must be in place. Trustees meet four times a year and you must speak to the Director before applying.

Who can apply

  • Open to everyone, amateur or professional, provided the application relates to the arts and the grant benefits members of the Elmbridge community
  • For Project grants: arts organisations professional and amateur, other Elmbridge organisations, voluntary and community groups that use the arts in their work or wish to host an occasional arts event, and consortia of organisations or individual artists
  • Grants are only awarded to properly constituted not-for-profit organisations, though they need not be registered charities, and any organisation applying for more than £500 must supply its most recent annual accounts
  • For Individual grants: anyone living or based in Elmbridge who is involved in the arts — composers, craftspeople, curators, dancers, designers, directors, film-makers, musicians, performers, producers, promoters, theatre technicians, visual artists and writers among others; the applicant must demonstrate other sources of income because the Trust contributes at most 50% of the total cost
  • For Capital grants: Elmbridge venues with a significant and valued arts programme, individuals and organisations buying instruments or technical equipment, and non-building-based arts organisations improving the arts resources available in the borough
  • For Underwriting grants: any Elmbridge-based or arts-related organisation, orchestra, society, choir, performer or musician planning a traditional venue-based performance or exhibition with the potential to make a profit, who can show an intention of making one

What it funds

  • Projects, events, performances and exhibitions that advance the arts in Elmbridge, the arts defined broadly as painting, music, literature, dance and other branches of creative activity
  • Project grants (£500–£1,000) where the community is involved in creating and delivering the work and the focus is on the artistic process
  • Individual grants (£500–£1,000) for arts-related skills, professional development, training materials and some technical or specific items
  • Capital grants (up to £1,500) for a specific item or piece of technical equipment, or to enhance an Elmbridge arts facility or venue
  • Underwriting grants (£500–£1,000) that cover the difference between the lowest estimated box office takings and the total cost of an event, with the final sum paid depending on actual ticket sales

What it will not fund

  • Ongoing educational costs
  • New-build 'bricks and mortar' projects
  • Projects scheduled to start less than three weeks after the Trustees' decision meeting

the Trust awards up to 50% of a project's costs, so it will not fund a project outright

successful applicants may not reapply within the same financial year (January to December)

How to apply

  1. Contact the Trust's Director, Pete Allen, at arts@rcsherrifftrust.org.uk before submitting anything — the Trust states you must do this first
  2. Check your proposal has a connection to the Borough of Elmbridge using the postcode checker on the site
  3. Decide which of the four grant types fits your goal: Project, Individual, Capital or Underwriting
  4. Download and complete the application form from the Grant Forms page, explaining how the grant advances the arts in Elmbridge and aligns with the Trust's five core goals
  5. Submit the form through the website, by email or by post so that it arrives before the quarterly deadline

successful applicants receive an offer letter setting out the amount and any conditions; sign and return it and a cheque is posted out

recipients are asked to issue a press release about the award and to report back on delivery afterwards
