The King Henry VIII Endowed Trust, Warwick

The King Henry VIII Endowed Trust Town Share Grants

Discretionary grants from the Trust's 'Town Share' (20% of its distribution) for organisations, schools and individuals benefiting the inhabitants of the Town (Old Borough) of Warwick. It can fund repair of historic buildings, relief of elderly, infirm and needy residents, social welfare, recreation and leisure facilities, educational facilities and any other charitable purpose. There is no fixed limit on requests; past grants have ranged from a few hundred pounds up to £150,000, and trustees have recently prioritised young people. Strictly limited to the Town of Warwick (broadly the CV34 postcode, with listed exceptions).

Who can apply

  • Officers of organisations within the Town of Warwick applying for the benefit of the Town's inhabitants (clubs, charities, churches, community groups, schools etc.); individuals resident in the Town can also apply on a separate form (not profiled here)
  • For educational projects provided by organisations to the Town's state schools, the recipient school must apply, not the provider
  • The area of benefit is the Town of Warwick (the four historic parishes of St Mary, St Nicholas, St Michael and St Paul, plus the whole of Warwick Gates) - broadly the CV34 postcode district, but some CV34 addresses are excluded (e.g. farms on Banbury Road, Saxon Mill) and some CV35/CV31 addresses are included (e.g. Woodloes Farm, Medley Grove, The Moorings and Myton Croft off Myton Road)
  • Applicants are normally expected to show they have tried to raise funds from their own resources or other funders first, and to show real financial need
  • Where members/pupils are not all from Warwick, the proportion who are must be given
  • Privately owned historic property is limited in the number of applications

What it funds

Grants for purposes benefiting the inhabitants of the Town of Warwick:

  • Repair of historic buildings in the Town
  • Relief of the elderly, infirm and needy inhabitants
  • Improvement of social welfare, recreation and leisure facilities
  • Support of educational facilities within the Town
  • Any other charitable activity

Capital and project costs; the Trust will consider start-up instalment funding for a new project for up to three years.

Emergency applications can be fast-tracked.

Trustees have in recent years prioritised grants supporting young people (over 50% of Town Share distribution, including schools).

What it will not fund

  • Persons or projects outside the Town of Warwick area of benefit
  • Projects for which central or local government has a financial responsibility, including activities that are the responsibility of the Local Authority
  • Retrospective grants (projects already started)
  • Regular annual revenue expenditure (not normally funded)
  • More than one grant per project (normally)

How to apply

  1. Check the area of benefit and purposes in the Grant Guidelines (ask the Clerk if in doubt)
  2. Download the 'Grant Application form - Organisation' (or the School form for schools) from the Make An Application page
  3. Complete the form, stating the purpose, total project cost, funds raised and expected, other funders applied to, and the exact grant requested
  4. Return the signed form with your latest accounts and current-year budgets to the Chief Operating Officer, 12 High Street, Warwick CV34 4AP, or by email to stheobald@kinghenryviii.org.uk, before the deadline (next: 2 November 2026 for the November meeting)
  5. Answer any follow-up questions from the Trust office, which will normally contact you to clarify the application
  6. Trustees consider applications at quarterly meetings (March, June, September, November)

Apply well before the deadline so the office can advise on presentation or ask for more information

State schools make one annual application, considered at the June meeting; counselling and care organisations should apply to the March meeting

The Trust may forward your application to, or recommend you approach, a more suitable Warwick charity (e.g. Warwick Relief in Need Charity, Warwick Apprenticing Charities)

Emergency applications may be fast-tracked - say so clearly on the application

Have ready

  • Signed Grant Application form (Organisation or School version)
  • Copies of most recent (audited) accounts
  • Current and future budgets
  • Details of all other grant applications made for the project, with amounts and outcomes
  • Details of the proportion of members/pupils from the Town of Warwick (where not all are)

Trustees may request further evidence of real financial need; grants are normally paid on production of receipted invoices
