Tameside Council grants for community projects that help residents through winter, funded from the Better Care Fund and the Crisis and Resilience Fund. Small grants up to £1,500, larger grants up to £5,000 for projects across more than one town or ward, and Financial Resilience grants up to £10,000. Open from 23 October 2026 until funds are spent.

Who can apply

  • Voluntary organisations, community groups, community interest companies, social enterprises, development trusts and charities running projects for the benefit of Tameside residents
  • Applicants must have a bank account in the organisation's name (in some cases funding may be issued via a lead or umbrella organisation) and confirm they have appropriate insurances, governance and risk assessments in place
  • Projects must show knowledge of the community and its needs and give direct support to people who need more help through the winter
  • Larger grants (up to £5,000) are for projects reaching more than one town or ward and the wider Tameside community, not one area or one organisation's members

What it funds

  • Better Care Fund: activities which help people in Tameside who need support to eat well, stay warm and healthy and avoid admission to hospital and other crises, including food related support and help to keep warm
  • Crisis and Resilience Fund: programmes and activities that improve financial resilience for individuals and local communities, to help residents better manage financial shocks and mitigate the occurrence, recurrence and escalation of crises
  • Crisis and Resilience Fund: the development or expansion of sustainable food support through community groceries, food pantries and food clubs

Crisis and Resilience Fund examples include money management and budgeting support, help with benefits, credit union partnerships, training for frontline staff and volunteers, teaching cooking on a budget or digital skills, helping food banks become community grocers or pantries, and peer support schemes. Projects must show outcomes such as reduced material deprivation, less need for emergency food parcels, better access to advice, increased savings, less priority debt, maximised incomes, or less need for Crisis and Housing Payments.

Better Care Fund priority groups include older people, people living in poverty, people who are homeless, carers, people with disabilities and anyone at risk of significant difficulty with daily living or isolation during winter.

What it will not fund

  • Parties (projects tackling isolation and low mood must show longer-term engagement)
  • Equipment solely for an organisation rather than for the benefit of the community
  • Untargeted give-aways (give-aways must clearly be targeted to those in need)
  • The ongoing purchase of food for food banks or similar community crisis provision (Crisis and Resilience Fund)
  • Organisations already receiving funding from the Crisis and Resilience Fund (Crisis and Resilience Fund)
  • Core organisational costs not linked to Crisis and Resilience Fund objectives
  • Activities unrelated to financial resilience or crisis prevention (Crisis and Resilience Fund)
  • Duplication of currently funded services and activity (Crisis and Resilience Fund)

How to apply

  1. Read the application guidance and decide which stream fits (marking it on the form is optional; the panel will place you)
  2. Apply online through the Community Winter Support Grants 2026/2027 SurveyMonkey form, or complete the Word application form and email it to communitywintersupport@tameside.gov.uk
  3. The panel meets at regular intervals and tells you its decision
  4. If funded, collect evaluation data through the project using the guidance sent with the award

If you want to run more than one project it is usually best to apply separately.

Your application may be passed to another funding partner if it is better suited there; you will be told.
