Greater London Authority consortium, with Brent Council

Warm Homes: Local Grant (Brent)

Free home energy improvements for low-income households in privately owned homes in Brent, through the government's Warm Homes: Local Grant. Brent is one of 31 London boroughs in a consortium led by the Greater London Authority, which delivers the scheme under terms set by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Upgrades can include insulation, solar panels and air source heat pumps, and occupants on a low income do not pay towards them (landlords may have to contribute). Demand is high and waits are long.

Who can apply

  • Households in Brent whose home is in England, privately owned (by them or their landlord) and has an Energy Performance Certificate of D to G (you can find it out when you apply)
  • Household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less; households earning more may still qualify if they live in certain postcode areas or someone in the household gets certain benefits
  • Under the GLA-run scheme, household savings must be under £25,000 on every eligibility route, not counting pension savings; households eligible for Pension Credit or receiving means-tested benefits are exempt from the savings cap

What it funds

Energy efficiency upgrades tailored to individual homes, which may include:

  • Insulation
  • Solar panels
  • Air source heat pumps

Occupants on a low income do not contribute to the cost of upgrades. If you have a landlord, they may need to pay for some of the improvements.

How to apply

  1. Check your eligibility and apply through the Warm Homes: Local Grant service on GOV.UK
  2. The GLA's delivery partner, Sureserve, confirms eligibility and arranges a home survey to decide which improvements to install
  3. Approved improvements are installed and paid for under the scheme

Because of a high volume of applications, waits between submission, eligibility confirmation and installation are longer than usual. For an application already submitted, contact Sureserve on 020 3961 5210 or SESUK.GLA@sureserve.co.uk. GOV.UK's assisted digital helpline is 0800 098 7950.
