Cheshire East Council

Urgent Adaptations Grant (Cheshire East)

A Cheshire East Council grant of up to £10,000, with no means test, for quick home adaptations for someone whose condition is rapidly deteriorating because of a life-limiting illness with a prognosis of 12 months or less, someone who cannot come home from hospital or a care placement until adaptations are done, or someone who needs a ceiling track hoist. Typical works are stairlifts, wash dry toilets, ceiling track hoists, temporary ramps and converting a bathroom into a level-access wet room, without structural changes. Larger works go through the means-tested Disabled Facilities Grant instead.

  • There is no means test
  • A referral from Occupational Therapy or the hospital discharge service is needed

What it funds

How to apply

  1. Call the Occupational Therapy service on 0300 123 5010, option 2, to request an assessment
  2. If the assessment finds you qualify, your details are passed to the council's Care and Repair service to access the grant
  3. The application is made with the Occupational Therapy or hospital referral, a quote from a council-appointed contractor (or at least two quotes), proof of identity and proof of ownership or consent of all owners
  4. Once approved, work must start within 1 month and be completed within 2 months

The council decides applications 'as soon as reasonably practicable'. Care and Repair operates a waiting list because of high demand.
