Who can apply

  • Residents of the Derbyshire Dales district who own the home or are a tenant (including licensees) and can provide the council's owner's certificate or tenant's certificate
  • The applicant need not be the disabled person; if applying on someone's behalf, say whose
  • The disabled person must live in the property and, under the national rules, intend to live there for the grant period, usually five years
  • Grants are means tested on household income and savings, so you should not assume you will qualify; under national rules disabled children under 18 can get a grant without their parents' income being counted
  • The council must be satisfied the work is necessary, appropriate, reasonable and practicable

What it funds

Adaptations giving better freedom of movement into and around the home, and/or providing essential facilities within it:

  • Widening doors and installing ramps
  • Providing or improving access to rooms and facilities, for example a stair lift or a downstairs bathroom
  • Improving or providing a heating system suitable for the disabled person's needs
  • Adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
  • Improving access to and movement around the home so a disabled person can care for another person who lives there, such as a child

How to apply

  1. Contact the council's Environmental Health section for information and an application
  2. An occupational therapist from Derbyshire County Council looks at your circumstances and recommends the adaptations needed
  3. The council means-tests the application and decides; under national rules it must decide within 6 months

National guidance warns that starting work before the council approves the application may mean you get no grant. Planning permission or building regulations approval is applied for separately, and work must normally be finished within 12 months of approval.
