Sports Foundation for the Disabled

Sports Foundation for the Disabled Grants

Grants of up to £1,000 for disability sport equipment, for not-for-profit organisations supporting people with physical disabilities or visual impairments, and for individual disabled sportspeople, in South West England and Wales. The Foundation has recently narrowed its criteria to fund equipment costs only. Applications are accepted year-round but must arrive at least 6 weeks before the equipment is bought, and the limited pot goes to the highest-priority applications.

Who can apply

  • Not-for-profit organisations supporting people with physical disabilities or visual impairments that are based in, or primarily benefit, South West England or Wales - for example disability sports clubs, special schools, inclusive community groups and registered charities working with disabled athletes
  • Coaches and instructors must hold appropriate NGB or accredited qualifications, keep appropriate participant-to-coach ratios, have a qualified lead coach supervising all sessions, and follow non-discriminatory policies in the governing documents
  • Organisations must have up-to-date risk assessments, current public liability insurance, first aid provision, participant registration forms and appropriate handling of medical information; those working with young people or vulnerable adults need a current safeguarding policy, DBS checks, reporting procedures and a designated safeguarding lead
  • Individuals can also apply if they are young people or adults in South West England or Wales with a physical disability or visual impairment who are part of a sports club, on a sporting pathway or linked to a National Governing Body
  • Previous recipients are not eligible

What it funds

  • New equipment and kit specifically designed for disability sport activities, for organisations supporting people with physical disabilities or visual impairments (and for individual disabled athletes)
  • The Foundation has recently amended its criteria and will only support applications for equipment costs
  • Successful applicants complete monitoring forms and share good news stories, photos, press coverage and case studies

What it will not fund

  • Individuals or groups that have previously received funding from the charity
  • Promotion of religious or political purposes
  • Capital items (except small equipment)
  • Ongoing training costs
  • Costs other than equipment
  • Equipment already purchased or bought within 6 weeks of the application being received

How to apply

  1. Check the Funding Criteria page to confirm you are eligible
  2. Complete the online Organisation Application Form (or the Individual Application Form) for grants up to £1,000
  3. Upload any supporting documents requested in the form
  4. Submit at least 6 weeks before the equipment is purchased
  5. Receive a decision about 6 weeks after the application is received

The grant pot is limited and applications are prioritised by need, so show your need clearly in the application.

Have ready

Note: The application form asks for supporting documents, but the website does not list them; the criteria require evidence of safeguarding (policy, DBS checks, designated lead) for organisations working with young people or vulnerable adults.
